
Semana Santa, or holy week, is the sceond most important holiday to the spanish, starting on Palm Sunday and ending on the Easter Sunday. The whole country is the breaking of cascarones, colored egg shells filled with confetti, over friends and family. Some feel that the most moving event is the renactment of the passion of the christ (see top right). People
carry statues of saints around on floats or wooden platforms. The people who carry the weight of the floats are called "costaleros" and are expected the carry these "thrones" with solemnity and grace. In some of the processions, marchers wear clothes that look like those of the klu klux klan (see left). Infact their clothes are meant to look like the NazareƱos, people from Nazareth.
